An SSL certificate will ensure that your customers personal information, such as their credit card, is transmitted across the internet safely and securely.

A payment gateway is an e-commerce service that authorizes payments for e-businesses and online retailers. It is the equivalent of a physical POS (point-of-sale) terminal located in most retail outlets. A merchant account provider is typically a separate company from the payment gateway. Some merchant account providers have their own payment gateways but the majority of companies use 3rd party payment gateways. The payment gateway handles all credit card authorizations by checking the customer's bank account to ensure funds for the sale are available. Once the check has completed, the payment gateway sends back a code to the e-commerce system that it can determine what the result of the authorization was.

A merchant account allows you to receive the funds captured by the payment gateway. When the payment gateway processes your payments for the day (usually called a batch) the money is released to your merchant account which is then deposited into your business bank account.
